Foundation Center Directory Online
Contact a librarian or the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (262-472-5212) for access. This provides information on more than 100,000 foundations, corporate giving programs, and grant making public charities in the US.
It also includes searchable databases of recently awarded grants, sponsoring companies, and recently filed IRS information returns (Forms 990 and 990-PF).
PrivCo
Financial information for US-based private companies earning at least $1 million in annual revenue or have at least $1 million in venture capital backing.
Note: You must create an account using your UWW email address, and this is how you will log in after NET ID authentication.
Each individual account has privileges for:
150 unique private company profile views per month
150 unique private company profiles exported via Excel per month
150 unique private company profile PDF downloads per month
plus "Saved Searched", "Company Watchlists", and all PrivCo individual account features.

If you need the 150 limit increased, please contact the Business Librarian so we can make the request to PrivCo. This is done on a case-by-case basis and must be for academic research purposes only.

However, several other sites are good for nonprofit research:

Charity Navigator
This organization was founded in 2001 and conducts evaluations of charities, specifically their financial health and their accountability and transparency
Charity Watch
Charity Watch provides rankings and publishes news about nonprofit organizations. Click the "Top Rated Charities" link at the top to get a list of "competitors" for your organization.

Guidestar
Not everyone will end up in the corporate sector. You may end up working for a nonprofit organization. Guidestar allows you to find a nonprofit's IRS Form 990, which is similar to a public corporation's 10-K report to the Securities and Exchange Commission. In the case of a foundation, this report will tell you the types of people or organizations to which they donate. The site does require registration to view the reports.
IRS's Tax Exempt Organization Search
This tool helps verify an organization's eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions, and review information about the organization's tax-exempt status and filings.
