Research@UWW - Books, Media, & More (UW System)
You can do a broad basic search of almost all of the articles we have using this linked search or in the search bar at the top of the page. Sign in using your NetID and password to request items not available at the library. Most requested items will be delivered within a couple of days.
WorldCat.org
Use this to search for books in libraries all across the world. You can request items found here for free via the Interlibrary Loan system.
Log on to ILLiad using your Net ID from the ILL page and request your item.
Google Scholar
A bigger search tool any of the library's databases. Not all of the articles are full-text, so use the directions on the Google Scholar tab to access or request articles through UW-Whitewater libraries.

National Fire Codes
The National Fire Protection Association's codes and standards are intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks. Click the desired code, then click the "Free Access" button to choose the edition you want to review.
Note: You must create an NFPA profile to access the free version. This is separate from your Net-ID.

NFPA Research Library and Digital Archives
The NFPA Research Library & Archives houses artifacts, images, and resources on NFPA Code development and Association history, fire research, fire prevention and suppression, and life and building safety.

Search Tips

Some of the fires assigned to you may be

quite obscure,
not widely studied,
or perhaps too new to have many scholarly studies done on them (this generally applies to fires within the last 5 years).

The following search tips apply to searching in nearly all the databases listed in this guide:

Don't use the year of the fire in the search box.
If you aren't finding anything on your exact fire, think of the type of fire and what lessons could have been learned from similar types of fires. For example, warehouse chemicals fire or circus fire.
Put the exact name of your fire in "quotation marks" -- this tells the database to search for those words in that order, as an exact phrase. For example, "Collinwood school fire" or Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire"
But, if that gives you few or no results, take some words out of the quotation marks. "Our lady of the angels" school fire may give you more results than "Our lady of the angels school fire".
