Reading eBooks in a Browser

If you choose to read an eBook within a database (without downloading it) you do not need special software. You browser will be able to display the text of the book for you. 

Software Requirements for Downloading eBooks

See the chart below to determine if your desired eBook is available for download.  Many eBooks use the ePub file format. Adobe Digital Editions is a free software that allows you to read ePub files on your computer.

Download this free software for offline reading on your computer or device.

  1. Install Adobe Digital Editions,
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Create a free Adobe ID account.
    • Use your email address and create a password to login to Adobe Digital Editions
  4. You can close the Adobe Digital Editions 'library.' You only need this software to be loaded on your computer to download eBooks.

Can I download or print this eBook?

E-book vendor/platform    Can I download these E-books to mobile devices or for viewing offline?  Printing & copying limits
ACLS Humanities E-Books The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) eBooks cannot be downloaded. You must view them on a device connected to the Internet. 

ACLS Humanities eBooks follows fair-use rights and restrictions for all books on its site. This means that you may print pages for your personal research use only.

For best printing results see Viewing Options and choose “Page pdf.” The default setting is set to both view and print three pages at a time. 
Brill E-Book Collections  Yes, you can download PDF files of Brill eBooks.

Brill E-Books follows fair-use rights and restrictions for all books on its site. This means that you may download or print pages for your personal research use only.

 

eBook Collection (EBSCOhost)**

**You will be prompted to login to download a book or chapter. This is a free/personal EBSCOhost account and you can use any username/password. 

Yes, you can download EBSCO eBooks for up to 7 days at a time. 

Be advised that many of the eBooks purchased from EBSCOhost only allow one user at a time to view, checkout or download them. If a single-user e-book has been checked out by someone else you will get a message that states: "Sorry, this eBook is in use." and you will get an option to place a Hold on the e-book. When the eBook becomes available, you will be notified via email and the E-book will be added to the Checkouts area of your MyEBSCOhost account folder for downloading.

Up to 60 pages of an eBook can be printed or saved per user as a PDF file.
