English 271: Critical Writing in the Field of English Literature: Borrowing from Other Libraries

Borrow Books & Get Article PDFs from Other Libraries

If the UWW library you use does not have the item you need, or if it has already been checked out by someone else, current UWW faculty, staff, and students can usually borrow it from another library. Which lending service to use depends upon the resource you wish to borrow. For assistance, please contact a reference librarian.

  • UW Request & Request - free
Use to borrow "returnable" materials such as books, videos, and government documents--if not available at your UWW library--from other UW System libraries. It cannot be used to borrow non-circulating items (such as reference books or items on reserve) or articles from periodicals. UW Request and Request are free services and items ordered generally arrive within 2-5 weekdays. For more information, and for instructions on use, go to our How to Borrow From Other Libraries: Request/UW Request page.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) - free
    • Use ILLiad to request scanned copies of articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers or chapters from books.
Approximate turnaround time is normally 2-4 weekdays for articles and book chapters, which are delivered online as PDFs.
    • Use to borrow books and other non-periodical materials that are not available at UWW libraries or other UW System libraries using UW Request.
Non-circulating items (such as reference books, entire journals, or items on reserve) cannot be borrowed.
Approximate turnaround time is currently 2-5 days for physical items. For more information, and for instructions on use, go to the Interlibrary Loan service web page.

Borrowing Materials from Other Libraries through WorldCat

Step-by-step instructions on using WorldCat for Interlibrary Loan through ILLiad.

  1. Click on WorldCat on the Library homepage.
  2. Search for a book by author, title, keywords, etc.
  3. Items owned by UW-Whitewater are highlighted in green. You do not need to borrow these using WorldCat unless they are unavailable at Whitewater.
  4. To see which libraries own a book, click on "Libraries Worldwide" below the title.
  5. If you see "UNIV OF WISCONSIN, WHITEWATER," select it to see whether our copy is available. If it is you can retrieve it from the given location in our library.
  6. If you see a different campus listed, e.g. "UNIV OF WISCONSIN, XXX," open a new window and search for the book in Research@UWW and use that interface to borrow it using UW Request.
  7. If the item is unavailable through the UW System, scroll down to the item's detailed record and select the ILLiad Request link in the "External Resources" field. Log in to ILLiad and click on the "Submit Request" button near the bottom of the page.
  8. Note: Items borrowed this way take about 5-7 weekdays to arrive at UW-Whitewater.
