Accounting Associations

Joining a professional association is a great way to build your resume. You will also make connections with others in your field and gain more knowledge about topic areas that interest you. This page lists a few prominent Accounting associations.

The American Accounting Association
The AAA has existed since 1916 and is one of the largest groups for academic accountants.
American Institute of CPAs
According to their website, "AICPA members represent many areas of practice, including business and industry, public practice, government, education and consulting. The AICPA sets ethical standards for the profession and U.S. auditing standards for audits of private companies, nonprofit organizations, federal, state and local governments."
Institute of Management Accountants
Since 1919, the IMA has worked to "promote knowledge and professionalism among cost accountants and foster a wider understanding of the role of cost accounting in management."
Association of Government Accountatnts
The AGA provide news, education and training opportunities, standards, and research in government accounting
Institute of Internal Auditors
The IIA provides guidance on the IPPF standards, and research and reports on Internal auditing. They also provide study resources for Internal Audit Practitioner, CIA (Certified Internal Auditor, and CRMA (Certification in Risk Management Assurance) certifications.

Deloitte
Deloitte first opened office in the United States in 1895. The company has over 170 locations around the world.
Ernst and Young
Ernst & Young came into being in 1989 when Arthur Young & Company and Ernst & Ernst merged.
KPMG
In 1987, Peat Marwick International and Klynveld Main Goerdeler combined to form KPMG.
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)
PwC was formed in 1998 when Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand merged companies.
