What are Altmetrics?

Altmetrics are metrics and qualitative data that are complementary to traditional, citation-based metrics.

Altmetrics can answer questions such as:

  • Was it cited in Wikipedia?
  • How many times was it downloaded?
  • Who is reading my work? (on Mendeley, bookmarking sites, etc.)
  • Was it covered in mainstream news?
  • How many times was it shared? (on Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Which countries are looking at my research?

Altmetrics is one of a number of alternative metrics applications or services:

Metrics Toolkit

The Metrics Toolkit defines various metrics and helps the researcher select appropriate metrics for the need.
