What are Altmetrics?

Altmetrics stands for "alternative metrics. Altmetrics are complementary to traditional, citation-based metrics, which bring into consideration the societal impact of research.

Altmetrics can answer questions such as:

  • Was it cited in Wikipedia?
  • How many times was it downloaded?
  • Who is reading my work? (on Mendeley, bookmarking sites, etc.)
  • Was it covered in mainstream news?
  • How many times was it shared? (on Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Which countries are looking at my research?
