Looking Up a Citation? (Backward Searching)

If you have found a book or article relevant to your topic, review the list of references (sources used by the authors) to determine if any of their cited works might also be relevant and helpful to you. Use Research@UWW to search for the book, book chapter, article, or other kind of source you've identified from the references. This is known as backward searching. It gives you an idea of the research/sources used in the article and the thinking prevalent in the field up until the time this source was published.

To locate the source, put the title of the source in quotation marks as this tells the database you are looking for that specific title/phrase of words. Use the search filters on the left-hand side under Refine My Results to limit the number of results. Filter for resource type, date, etc. to help narrow down the field. Adding the author's last name to the search can also help narrow the results.

To search the entire list of references for a particular article, select the Citations tab on the left-hand side of the screen of the article's record in Research@UWW. This will bring you to the bottom of the page. Select cited in this to perform a search for every entry in the references list that is available in Research@UWW.

Who Has Cited This Work? (Forward Searching)

This is known as forward searching. Forward searching can help you understand how the work has influenced the research and scholarship in the field.

To perform a search to see what other works have cited a particular article, select the Citations tab on the left-hand side of the screen of the article's record in Research@UWW. This will bring you to the bottom of the page. Select citing this to perform a search for every work that has cited the particular article that is available in Research@UWW.
