Media - Public Performance and Streaming Licenses: Kanopy Streaming

About Kanopy

Kanopy Streaming provides access to thousands of documentary and feature films from many leading producers including the Criterion Collection, PBS, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, The Great Courses, California Newsreel and hundreds more. These films are only licensed for 1-year terms, so if continuing use is expected, then a more permanent, life-of-video option should be pursued.

Requesting a Film

If we have not yet licensed a Kanopy film, you will be directed to a request form. Please film out the form and Library staff will get back to you.  If the film is for a future class, please indicate the semester in which the film will be shown.

Accessibility

Most Kanopy films have closed captions as well as transcripts. If a film is not closed-captioned, we can request captioning.

Public Performance Rights

As an academic institution, all Kanopy films licensed by the library include public performance rights as long as NO ADMISSION is charged and the screening is held ON CAMPUS grounds.  This includes Rock County campus as well as the Whitewater campus.

Sharing a Film

Use the "Share" link below or next to the film to get the film URL to share or embed in Canvas.

Expiration of Kanopy Films

Kanopy titles are acquired throughout the year when requested by faculty, so there is no standard expiration date.  If you plan on using a film in your class, make sure to verify the expiration date in the library catalog record to ensure it is available for your students.  You can also view a list of upcoming Kanopy Titles Expiring, broken down by semester, on our Collections page.
