Finding Photos & Digital Images

These sources will help you locate images. But remember that you must properly credit information taken from these sources, even if the material is considered to be in the public domain. See the Citing section of this guide.

Over 2.5 million digital images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences. See the Library's ARTstor Guide for help in using ARTstor.

Artcyclopedia
Search by artist, artwork or art museum. Look up the titles or subjects of artwork and find images of the artwork and a bit of information about them. There are a certain number of dead links.
AskArt
Includes information on 52,000 artists.
Discover Yale Digital Content
Search 250,000 objects from Yale's art museums and other digital collections.
Google Images Search
Images found on the internet are NOT automatically available for you to freely use. Check an image's license to see your options.
1. Search for images
2. You may need to click on "Images" under the search box
3. Click on the "Tools"* button
4. Select "Creative Commons Licenses" from "Usage Rights"
5. Click on an image
6. Click on "Visit"
7. Copy image
8. Paste into your project
9. Cite image
NOTE: Use other tools to limit by size, file type, and more.
Google Images-Reverse Image Search
To do a reverse image search, first click on the Camera icon, then do one of the following:
1. Drag and drop an image from the web or your computer into the search box
2. Upload an image using the “Upload an Image” box
3. Copy and paste the URL for an image into the “Paste Image URL” box
4. When using the Chrome browser, right-click on an image on the web and select “Search Google for image”

Features 1,700 artworks from the Guggenheim's collections.
The Met Collection (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
Over 490,000 of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's high resolution digital images are freely available for non-commercial use. The Image & Data Resources page will explain more about the images and terms of use. Look for the OASC icon in photo captions for open-access images.
Museum of Modern Art
More than 92,000 modern and contemporary art images from MOMA's collections.
Research@UWW Advanced Search
To search for an artist as a subject, change "Any Field" to "Subject" and type Last Name, First Name in the search box. Or you can just type the artist's name or the work of art in quotation marks: "Thomas Hart Benton".
Tate Gallery
More than 70,000 images from Tate's modern art collections.
UW Digitized Collections
The UWDC provides quality digital resources from University of Wisconsin libraries to UW faculty, staff and students, citizens of the state, and scholars at large. Resources within the collections are free and publicly accessible online.
