On this page you will find a selection of books in the Andersen Library that might be useful for your assignment. Use Research@UWW, the online library catalog, to find additional books on these and other related topics. Also remember that you can search for and borrow books from other UW System Libraries using UW Request.

Access to Research@UWW is provided in the large center box on the libraries' homepage. Run a search, when you find a book you want to investigate click on its title. In the book's record, go to the Format section and look for words and abbreviations such as: "illustrations, "illus." or "ill." for books with illustrations. If you see the word "plates" in this section that means there are illustrations, photographs, and other visual content on separate pages. Sometimes it will be noted if the illustrations or photos are in color.

Also look in the Subjects area. The term "pictorial works" can be very helpful in finding books with a lot of images.

To summarize the Search Tips, it is worthwhile to be both comprehensive and focused when searching.

• Be comprehensive by using a variety of keywords representing the same/similar concept and truncating terms when appropriate. These practices will find you more results.
• Be focused by adding more keywords representing different facets of your research question and enclosing common phrases in quotation marks. These practices will find you fewer results.

Note: The word "costume" usually refers to modes of dress, not costumes as the word is commonly used today. For the latter, there is usually a clarifying word added to the subject, such as "dance costume" or "ballet costume."
