What is This?

The purpose of this libguide is to suggest sources of information about biological organism classification and phylogeny. These are not the only resources which can be used, but are rather suggested as starting points for your research.

  • DiscoverLife essentially an encyclopedia and identification guide for all different types of flora and fauna, has taxonomy diagrams, may be browsed or searches http://www.discoverlife.org

  • Encyclopedia of Life  searchable guide of all species of flora and fauna http://eol.org/

  • ITIS (Integrated Taxonomic Information System), taxonomy information database of all species of flora and fauna searchable by scientific or common name http://www.itis.gov/

  • NCBI Taxonomy Browser tells full lineage of species of flora and fauna and provides links to many reputable sources of information about the species http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Info&id=3507

  • Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Wilson & Reeder’s Mammal Species of the World, provides taxonomic information about mammals http://www.vertebrates.si.edu/msw/mswcfapp/msw/index.cfm

  • Tree of Life Web Project browsable taxonomy chart, also searchable for all types of flora and fauna http://tolweb.org/tree/

  • Treebase searchable database of trees containing studies and information about tree species, including outside links to many other reputable websites http://www.treebase.org

  • USDA Plants Database searchable by common or scientific name, provides classification and a list of print references containing information about plant species   http://plants.usda.gov/java/
